What’s the best way to clean greasy oven racks?
Cleaning greasy oven racks
Oven racks can be the most tricky things to clean as grease and food build up over time as you cook – your oven racks are in use a lot as well so it can be difficult to find an appropriate time to clean them. Here are some tips on how to clean your oven racks!
Prepare your racks
Firstly, you’ll need to remove the racks from your oven to assure you’ll be able to get every inch of them clean – they should easily slide out. Choose a time where you’re not going to be using the oven to clean the racks, such as takeout night!
Baking soda and vinegar
Sprinkle baking soda over the racks and then cover them in vinegar. Once they’ve started to foam, wipe the racks down with warm water. It can be useful to let them soak, too.
Using your bathtub
Another method involves the use of your bathtub! First, place old towels at the bottom of your bathtub to avoid the racks scratching it, then fill up the bath with hot water until the racks are covered. Next, add a dishwashing detergent and let the racks sit in the tub overnight. Rub the grime and grease off the racks the next day using a sponge, cloth or toothbrush – good as new!
Oven cleaner
You can also use an oven cleaner, but you must be wary of toxic fumes. Always use these products outside or in well-ventilated space, and when cleaning the racks be sure to use rubber gloves! Spray the cleaning product onto the racks and leave to sit for 10-15 minutes or according to what it says on the label. Afterwards, rinse thoroughly and scrub with a sponge or toothbrush to get rid of that extra grime.
